At The Music Shed, each semester is a chance for young musicians to grow, perform, and shine. We run three semesters a year—Fall (September–January), Spring (February–June), and Summer (July–August). In every program, students are placed in a band with others of similar skill and age.
Each semester, bands learn 7–10 songs, with weekly 90-minute rehearsals. We focus on every aspect of musicianship:
Rehearsals are not just about running songs—they’re about building the skills and friendships that make playing in a band unforgettable. Students are encouraged to ask questions, take risks, and be themselves without apologies.
Every semester ends with a high-energy Shed Fest performance, where each band takes the stage to perform their full setlist for a live audience.
When I founded The Music Shed in 2009, I saw so many kids taking private lessons for a year or two before quitting. Why? Because they never got the chance to actually play in a real band. I built The Music Shed to change that—giving students the same teamwork and excitement you’d find in sports or theater, but through music.
Over the years, I’ve seen students grow from beginners to seasoned performers. Some stay for just a semester, others for seven years or more. Many have reached professional levels of musicianship, but all have built confidence, friendships, and a lifelong love of music.

More than a treat to hear Neal Miner last night at Uncle Cheef in Brewster! One of my all time favorite musicians and a dear friend. It reminded me of the truth that the way you play is who you are. Neal is a master. I’m still smiling.
